Life Cycle Assessment has been a tool for manufacturers and product engineers to identify and decrease the environmentally burdensome portions of the production process. These same practices of analysis can be applied at the building scale as an optimization tool for designers and contractors. In this session a panel of experts in LCA application through Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) and Whole Building LCA will speak about the state of the industry, the connection of product optimization to building optimization, and how LCA is applied in new requirements in LEED v4. Speakers will present industry case studies as examples of LCA application as a tool and explain how LCA is integrated into current and future LEED development.

Learning Objectives:

  • Articulate what life cycle analysis is, how it is used, and why it is important.
  • Discover how life cycle analysis has been incorporated into LEED v4.
  • Determine how to apply life cycle assessment to analyze an entire building.
  • Identify how life cycle analysis can be used to inform design decisions.

This session is approved for 1 hour of LEED Specific (LEED AP BD+C, LEED AP ID+C, LEED AP O+M) GBCI hours.
